Review Integration Workflows

How AscertAInit Fits
Your Review Process

AI-powered design review should never compromise the independence of your check process. AscertAInit is designed to operate on completed deliverables as a verification aid and can be configured to align with your facility's existing review procedures. Below are several integration models : each addressing a different question about how AI fits into your workflow.

The Bias Problem

Why This Matters

If a checker receives a deliverable pre-screened by AI, they risk anchoring on the AI's output and softening their critical eye. Research in aviation and medicine has shown that error detection rates can drop significantly: some studies indicate 20-40%: when operators know automated screening has already occurred. This is automation complacency, and the principle applies to engineering design review. We designed around it.

🧠 Automation Complacency

When a checker knows AI already screened a deliverable, research suggests their error detection rate drops. They default to "the AI probably caught it" instead of exercising independent judgment. This directly conflicts with established human performance improvement (HPI) principles of self-checking and independent verification.

⚖️ Anchoring Effect

Seeing AI findings before forming independent conclusions biases the checker toward confirming rather than discovering. They check the AI's work instead of checking the document.

📋 Audit Defensibility

In NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, and DOE O 414.1D environments, independent verification means independent. Regulators and auditors are likely to ask how you ensured the checker's review wasn't pre-influenced. Organizations should evaluate AI tool adoption through their existing change control and design authority processes.

🛡️ Our Solution

Every workflow below was designed consistent with human performance improvement principles: error prevention, independent verification, and self-checking. Workflow selection is governed by your project's Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP) or equivalent and is determined during pilot onboarding in coordination with your QA organization. Choose the model that matches your regulatory exposure and risk tolerance.

Integration Models

Ways to Integrate

Select the workflow that matches your program's regulatory environment. Each model is configured during pilot onboarding to align with your facility's existing engineering procedures and design control processes. AscertAInit is not anticipated to require changes to your authorization basis or safety basis documentation, though facilities should confirm through their existing change evaluation processes.

A
Originator Self-Check
AI assists the originator. Checker stays fully independent.
NQA-1 AlignedDOE / NNSA
Engineer OriginatesDevelops deliverable
AscertAInCatches gaps & errors
Originator FixesResolves findings
Clean Handoff
Human Independent CheckNo AI findings shown
ApprovedDispositioned & signed
Advantages
  • Checker never sees AI findings, preserving full review independence
  • Higher quality submittals reach the checker, helping reduce rework loops
  • Strong audit defensibility: two fully independent review passes
  • Designed for compatibility with NQA-1 and DOE O 414.1D verification requirements
  • Designed to generate retrievable QA records: AI finding log, originator disposition record, and submittal verification trail
Tradeoffs
  • Checker does not directly benefit from AI acceleration
  • Potential for checker to re-identify issues the originator already fixed
  • Slightly longer overall cycle vs. workflows where checker uses AI
Recommended for: NQA-1 programs, DOE/NNSA safety-class and safety-significant SSC reviews, any environment where independent verification must be audit-defensible.
B
Blind Review + Reconciliation
Two independent passes. Compare and reconcile.
NQA-1 AlignedIndependent Review
Engineer OriginatesCompletes deliverable
Human Independent Check
PARALLEL & INDEPENDENT
AscertAIn Check
Reconcile FindingsCompare both sets of findings
Originator ResolvesAddresses all findings
ApprovedDispositioned & signed
Advantages
  • Minimal bias risk: human and AI reviews are designed to be fully blind to each other
  • Can catch errors that either human or AI review might miss individually
  • Reconciliation report creates powerful audit documentation
  • Mirrors the principles of independent parallel review used in nuclear safety analysis
  • Designed to generate full audit trail: independent AI finding log, human checker findings, and formal reconciliation report with disposition of all discrepancies
Tradeoffs
  • Additional reconciliation step adds time to the overall cycle
  • Requires discipline to keep results truly separate until reconciliation
  • Higher initial effort, though net time savings can still be meaningful
Recommended for: Safety basis calculations, seismic and structural analysis reviews, and any deliverable where independent verification by separate methods is required.
C
Full Acceleration
AI assists both originator and checker for maximum speed.
Fast-TrackCommercial EPC
Engineer OriginatesDevelops deliverable
AscertAIn Pass 1Originator self-check
Fix & SubmitResolves findings
Human Checker
+
AscertAIn Pass 2
AI as checker's tool
ApprovedFastest cycle time
Advantages
  • Maximum schedule compression across the entire review cycle
  • Both originator and checker benefit from AI-assisted error detection
  • Checker uses AI as a supplementary tool, not a replacement for judgment
  • Ideal for high-volume deliverable environments with tight deadlines
  • Designed to generate combined review records: AI finding logs for both passes and checker acknowledgment of AI-assisted review
Tradeoffs
  • Higher automation complacency risk if checker over-relies on AI output
  • May not satisfy independent review requirements in nuclear QA programs
  • Requires checker training on how to use AI as a tool without anchoring
  • Less audit-defensible than Workflows A or B for safety-class work
Recommended for: Commercial EPC fast-track projects, non-nuclear industrial work, preliminary/conceptual design phases, and environments where schedule is the primary driver.
D
Independent & Third-Party Reviews
Better thinking before bigger spending.
Front-EndAdvisory
Existing DocumentationDesign, cost, schedule, safety basis
AscertAIn AnalysisTechnical, cost, schedule review
Human Analyst ReviewSynthesizes findings, applies judgment
Risk Assessment ReportGo / no-go recommendation
Advantages
  • Rapidly surfaces gaps, inconsistencies, and risk areas across large documentation packages
  • Independent red team / green team analysis before capital commitment
  • Covers technical, cost, and schedule claims in a single integrated review
  • Accelerates front-end planning and supports DOE CD-1/CD-2 gate readiness
  • Designed to generate structured risk register with AI-identified findings and human analyst disposition
Tradeoffs
  • Quality of output depends heavily on completeness of input documentation
  • AI findings require experienced analyst to contextualize and prioritize
  • Not a substitute for formal independent project review per DOE O 413.3B
Recommended for: Pre-acquisition due diligence, VC/investor technical validation, DOE critical decision gate reviews, independent project assessments, and any scenario where you need confidence in claims before committing capital.
The Core Principle

AscertAInit doesn't replace the checker.
It elevates the rigor checking deserves: and does the heavy lifting before the checker starts.

AscertAInit integrates into your existing design control process as a verification aid : reviewing completed design outputs like drawings, calculations, and specifications before they move downstream. The originator can submit better work. The checker can spend less time on obvious errors and more time on the engineering judgment calls that actually require a human. Rework loops can shrink. Schedules can compress. Quality improves. The downstream impact: cleaner design packages for construction and commissioning, with the potential for fewer RFIs and field changes.
